Lyric: Then you’d know I worship you
I’ll trade my life for yours
Annotation:
These lines are sung to the tune of and are of course reference to the previous song “Our Love Is God” albeit this time under a much more literal note, as he is actually trading his life for hers.

Lyric: Wait, hold on—
Annotation:
Veronica in the musical is hesitating. She doesn’t want JD to kill himself since it’s been clear that she still sees some good in him. in the movie, Veronica didn’t feel any remorse for JD as he was about to blow himself up. She simply lit a cigarette and watched as her Ex psychopathic boyfriend blow up. While in the musical, Veronica was trying to at least stop him, but as we all know, her attempts failed.

Lyric: Oh my God—
Annotation:
Veronica has just realized that JD is going to kill himself.

Lyric: Say “Hi” to God
Annotation:
In a sick way, Veronica believes JD is going to heaven. Despite the fact of them murdering Heather C, Ram, and Kurt. Veronica still believes JD is deep down a good person

Lyric: Veronica, what are you doing?!
Annotation:
Veronica is stealing the red scrunchie from Heather Duke’s hair, essentially stealing her crown.

Lyric: Our love is God
 Our love is God
 Our love is God
 Our love is God
Annotation:
This is a reference to their previous romantic ballad. J.D. says it because she wants her to say it back; he still “loves” her, in his twisted way.

Lyric: Clean up the mess down here
Annotation:
In the original off-Broadway version, JD says before the song that he now understands Veronica’s point of view, and that the reason why he was committing murders was that, because of his dad, he learned to solve problems by destroying things rather than building new things. While this new version contains different dialogues in which JD still doesn’t understand her perspective, he decides to respect her desire to let the students of Westerburg live. Since this song is essentially his suicide note, he says that he gives up on destroying things and killing people to make society better, but still counts on Veronica to improve the school and the world in her own way, which involves fixing things rather than destroying them.

Lyric: I am damaged
 But you’re different
You’re the one we oughta spare
God knows why you wanna save them
But you beat me fair and square
Annotation:
The lyrics in the original cast album are “I am damaged, far too damaged But you’re not beyond repair Stick around here Make things better ‘Cause you beat me fair and square” The second version is more realistic. J.D. has been a destroyer throughout the play, so it makes sense that he wouldn’t suddenly tell Veronica to “make things better.”
While he still doesn’t understand Veronica’s desire to let the students live, he now understands that forcing her to blow up the school with him was wrong and that, in order to have her be happy, he needs to respect her wish to spare them.
